"Good recommendation. I will be picking it up. Seems more than just the period of 1840s through reconstruction."

Trapdoor2 replied to Timothy Twiss's discussion Briggs' to A/E notation
"It might help you to use an old trick on one or two of the A notation pieces to get your brain to make the switch. Get a pencil and a straightedge. On the A notation sheet, draw a new staff line at C, below the original's bottom staff line.…"

Trapdoor2 replied to M'lou Brubaker's discussion Reading musical notation for the various Tutor books
"Funnily (at least to me), guitar-style picking has two roots, European and African. There are ekonting players in Africa who use a finger-picking style. While the most likely source is indeed the European guitar/lute traditions, it is possible that…"

Trapdoor2 replied to M'lou Brubaker's discussion Reading musical notation for the various Tutor books
"They're talking about 3-finger (and sometimes 4-finger) picking, exactly like Scruggs (without Scruggs' own invention of "rolls" upon which he based his 'style'). Guitar style was simply fingerpicking. The basics are…"

Trapdoor2 replied to Matthew Menice's discussion A Question
"I attended the very last "Tennessee Banjo Institute" in 1992 and was fascinated by Clarke Beuhling's minstrel performance at the "Banjo Meltdown" show. I had owned an 1889 Stewart banjo for about 5 years (playing it in…"

First, the disclaimer: I know not what I do. I may have disremembered, misquoted, misplaced, waxed hyperbolic or simply forgot. No spotted owls were eaten without the proper Mornay sauce having been ladled properly over each. Rolling verbosity knob to 12...

I had several things in mind whilst…

Hi Marc.  Thanks for the comment.  I am not sure how the site works with friends and whatnot, so I am likely to be clumsy.  There was a discussion about a video I posted on YouTube last year that I just discovered and felt I should respond to, so I just finished going on and on about it.  I sure hope that doesn't wear out my welcome.  It is so interesting for me to discover this vibrant community since I have been so isolated in my work over the years and have actually started performing banjo music again after decades (!) of neglect.  Anyway, thanks for the kind words.  Paul

Hi, I sent you a friend request so I could ask about the banjo in your profile pic--I didn't realize I could simply leave a comment here asking about it (I just joined, still learning my way around).  Otherwise, I wouldn't have sent a friend request to someone I didn't know, so please feel free to respond via comments, no need to accept the request since you don't know me.  :-)
