Noah Cline replied to CURTIS PAYNE's discussion what year were steal strings introduced on the banjo?
"I've seen a reference of 1850 for the first wire string in the U.S., but can't remember for which instrument. Most likely the piano that's been mentioned."

"Rob, from what I remember, my friend's L&H literaly reminded me of the same construction as my Morgan Monroe open back, though it had a wooden dowel. And it had a pretty good-sized tone ring in it, too. I see if I can find a pic of one…"

Noah Cline replied to CURTIS PAYNE's discussion what year were steal strings introduced on the banjo?
"Joel, the more I've thought about it, I think maybe that the L&H I mentioned is perhaps later (1920's), as it looked more from that time structurely as opposed to the late 1890's. I don't know a whole lot…"

"Btw, I know what you mean with the 2nd SC String Band. I have one of their first cd's, and Joe Ewers is playing the banjo fingerstyle. The later ones, he's playing a minstrel and evidently a regular open back on their newer…"

Noah Cline replied to CURTIS PAYNE's discussion what year were steal strings introduced on the banjo?
"I've seen a banjo that a friend of mine brought to a jam to show me, a Lyon and Healy Washburn. He was able to date it to 1896/1897 via the serial #. It had a truss rod cover, so I assumed it had a truss rod, and would have been likely strung…"

I have been enjoying banjo for about five years, and I wanted to learn about early banjo and to be able to play it accurately, and for the past two years, I have enjoyed it. I wanted to thank Tim Twiss for being a resource of this music. I had resources from a couple of books by Joe Weidlich and others, and the songs made better sense when I watched Tim's YouTube videos. So I'm sending a big thanks to Tim.
