Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

First of all, I think this whole "Friday tune" thing is a hoot...and if we keep it up, we'll have ~50 tunes under our belts by next year. I can't say that I'll keep up, but at least I'll try. BTW, I started a new discussion...which I recommend for each week. That way, it will make searching for tunes a LOT easier.

I went to a festival today (Nashville's "Breaking Up Winter" Old Time fest) and played OT clawhammer banjo continuously from 10am to 5pm. My fingers are sore!

On the positive side, there was a great vendor there, "The Cleff'd Ear", who has just about every music book ever printed. Not only did I score a copy of "Ryans", I also found "Howe's 1,000 Jigs and Reels". Between those two and O'Neil's, I have enough fiddle tunes to last several lifetimes...

So, while I will be working on "Jim Along Josie" (though I cannot imagine singing), I propose something in A...and a hornpipe, just to be different: "Lincoln's Hornpipe", page 132 (orig. page 192). I can't scan it till Monday...but I might be able to produce TAB/Notation by tomorrow night.

===Marc

PS, my apologies if this tune turns out to be a trainwreck. I can't read/scan except for "range"...no telling if this tune will work on the banjo.

PPS, I'm informed by Mr. Twiss that he has already posted video of this tune. That figures. I'll go find another!

This works great on the banjo, using Rice's tuning (A vs Briggs' G). Its a great choice.
Yes, and Tim plays it so well!

So...I've chosen another tune. Appropriately enough, it is "Smith's Reel", page 73 in Ryans. Another tune in A and with some oxygen requirements in the 2nd part.

Have fun! I have the .pdf loaded, see below.

D. This tune is in the key of D. Sometimes I don't know where my head is at...
Smith's Reel looks like a good tune. Well chosen, Marc.

The upper-altitude phrases always end with a D, presumably providing an "out" as we fumble with our oxygen masks.
WILD RACCOON TRACK
I don't know if this is the tune of the week, but I found it interesting. I took it down a m3 and it sets in a good banjo key. I think it would make an awseome arrangement with the right thumb string notes. It was quite a popular song.

Works for me, if everybody wants to take a stab at arranging this for the Tune Of The Week.
Unfortunately, I've had company all week and haven't had a banjo out since Sunday last. I'll have to go into remedial training if this keeps up. Hopefully, said company will depart Tuesday...

The three of you posted great versions of Smith's Reel...once again, all different. I love it!
