Oh, and the only reason the 'started off straight for home' verse is missing is that I recorded the banjo first, and miscounted how many repeats I'd need; came up one short.

Andy I love what you did here.  That banjer sounds very old, goes great with your voice too. Terrific rendition!

One of my favorite songs, which Brian and i dedicate to our dear departed cat Boy Boy, and when we sing it at home we usually adapt the lyrics to "Boy Boy kickin' up 'ahind....... and the yeller cat kickin' up 'ahind Boy Boy..."   since BoyBoy used to kick up the sand pretty good in the cat box.  lolol!

Great job. I found the tune in the Briggs Instructor, but alas there are no lyrics with it. Where does one find the lyrics to the tune?

I think I got my lyrics from Bob Winans' version (which I guess uses the Emmet book!) 

Mudcat.org can also be a good place to look for lyrics/info/discussion; it's officially folk/trad oriented but as so many of the minstrel tunes of the 1800s have been absorbed into the folk tradition they do show up there sometimes.

Thanks for the links. I did find the mudcat cafe lyrics, but they seemed to be different from the ones that I heard.

Some of the  lyrics of this tune could be considered rather rude. How do you deal with that? Sanitize them? Skip the bad ones? Sing them anyway?
