How old is that bass drum?
Not totally sure.....we're dating it. Found some writing..
I've personally not researched it but most sources put the kick bass drum in the early 20th century. Photos tend to support this.
Does bring up a good question though about the use of drums in popular music (not brass band music). Converse wrote about Hipe Rumsey having a nickel rim drum that was made for him by Wilson of Troy, NY. From his descriptions of his act one is left with the impression that it was a solo with stick twirling effects and not necessarily the rhythm accompaniment we think of today.
Eph Horn was evidently also a drummer. In 1857 he was working as a clown for a circus. A child cut a hole in the tent and was peeking in. It was reported in the Clipper that Eph hit him with a drum stick in the face and the child lost his eye.
Just to verify the nature of my inquiry.......It wasn't meant as an accusation of being unauthentic.
I was merely curious as to how old the bass drum was. I appreciate Joel's posting, however. It is interesting to get a little historical perspective on the use of drums.
It's a big one, isn't it??
Boom pah!
But...it is older than the Strat I pulled out.
