Joel Walker Sweeney Early Banjo Convergence, 2015 at Appomattox Courthouse National Historic Park

May 29, 2015 to May 31, 2015
Calling all early banjo, fiddle, guitar, tambo, and bones players to save the date for the second Sweeney Early Banjo Convergence! We will once again gather on the beautiful grounds of the Appomattox Courthouse National Historic Park, where Sweeney was born and  learned to play the banjo, for some merry music making and fun. This year will be much less formal in structure than the 2013 event, as we plan to keep lectures to a minimum and banjo stroking to a maximum! The National Historic Park,…See More

Great to see you, too!  What a weekend!!  When I hear that car horn, will I be in the middle of a crosswalk?

Michael, you said that your two worlds (minstrel banjo and brass band) collide.

I wonder if you are similar to me in that I enjoy playing tunes on the banjo which are normally associated with period brass bands, though I don't play a brass band instrument.  Here are some of the tunes I play on the banjo....

Easter Galop/Railsplitter's Polka/National Schottische/Jenny Lind Polka/Holiday Schottische/Detroit Schottische/Flying Cloud Schottische/Rainbow Schottische/Prima Dona Waltz/Philadelphia Fireman's Cotillion/Last Rose of Summer/Listen to the Mockingbird/Steamboat Waltz/Rochester Schottische/LaCachucha

I haven't played many of the brass band songs we play on the banjo, at least not yet, but I do enjoy Last Rose of Summer and Jenny Lind quite a bit. If you have any of those tunes you mentioned written out I'd love to try them out!
