Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Who thinks a small tab publication of tunes likely to be played at the banjo gathering is a good idea? It can be available as a download ahead of time, and in print at the site. It may have a dozen songs that are popular to play and lyrics to some of them. It's fun to tak part in group playing, and will be concert material too, for those that would like to play as a large ensemble.

Of those mentioned so far, the ones that stick out to me that have been popular and you would hear over and over at the last 3 or 4 gatherings I attended, and the workshops at Harper's Ferry are Briggs' Jig, Circus Jig, Congo Prince Jig, Brigg's Corn Shucking Jig, Injun Rubber Overcoat, Grape Vine Twist, Old Joe, Old Dan Tucker, Jim Along Josie, and also Ring Ring the Banjo would be played at least at one of the public concerts as a group.

Add Rose of Alabama and Old Johnny Boker back in and it's a great 'standards' list of 15- and yes include lyrics for some of these songs.  (and I'd think we would omit or edit any offensive N word verses)  Having some lyrics sheets around would enable others to sing if they couldn't play the tunes yet...or spouses singing.

Briggs' Jig
Circus Jig
Get up in the morning
Cotton Pod Walkaround
Camptown Hornpipe
Brigg's Corn Shucking Jig
Injun Rubber Overcoat
Old Joe
Old Dan Tucker
Boston Jig
Mary Blane
Jim Along Josie
Going Ober the Mountain

The good thing about those long songs with multiple verses is the ability to pass it around in a group...let a lot of folk take a verse.

Old Tar River is good for that too.

I don't know if this will work or not but it's an idea that I have used when I'm going to play some place.

I put songs/tunes into this form & send it to myself in email so I can play along, one click at a time.

Even if not playing along, it's a way of getting the tunes in my head.

I should've added.  If using this method, (previous posting) pick versions that are in the same tuning.

These are all in 'G' tuning or close to it.
