Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Two of my favorites from Knauff's Virginia Reels put together as a medley. That B part on Old Dominion always wants to speed out of control!

Nice tunes.  I've had copies of Knauff's No.1 and No.3., and though I have the list for No.2, I can't find the music.  I don't find the titles of either of the two you play here, though, according to the beginning of the video, one is from 1850.  I find "Virginia Cotillion" and "Virginia Quick March" from 1839.  Are they part of another (No.4, for example)?  I also find 7 tunes from 1840.

My question is how many parts are there to the 1839 collection and where would I find them.

I think, Mark, that you are putting something together on this collection so I don't want to ask questions that would cut into your research before you put something out, as I'll be looking forward to it.

Al, "Love From the Heart" is called "Mississippi Sawyer" in Knauff #1, but since his "Love From the heart" is obviously Mississippi Sawyer, I am calling a kettle black and changing the names. He must simply have erred in his documentation. That is from 1839. "Old Dominion Reel" is from a later publication of Knauff's for a different publisher (Benteen).

And yes, I have been working for over 3 years on this Knauff into banjo project. I would have published it last year but ran into some health issues. Again, I plan to have it out by The Sweeny Convergence in May. 30 tunes in all.

So are you making the Knauff stuff into a book similar to the Sweeney book? I am really diggin this stuff.

I'm taking a different twist on Knauff.  I have all 4 now, and am creating scores.  To be somewhat different than what Mark is doing I'm more interested in the overall scores.  Melody line and chords from the original piano scores. I've got everything into Finale, so I can transpose, etc.  I'm very interested in Mark's banjo translation, but also want to see ensemble work with these pieces.

Not to my knowledge.  That's why I've taken on re-scoring all of them to melody line and chords.  It is an interesting project.
