Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Not at all banjo music but thought someone might be interested in popular music through the years.
Originally, I made this video for my dad's 100th birthday celebration last weekend then added 1900-1915 to put it on YouTube. I mistakenly left a couple things from the original such as my parent's wedding photo in 1938 and my dad's draft registration card.

Should've warned that it's about an hour and ten minutes.  I guess, if inclined, one could click around in different eras.

Ok.  Why don't I get any sound?  There is sound on the YouTube version.

I guess there were copyrights on some of the popular music I used so it has been muted.

That makes sense, I guess, except that my source for all the music I used was YouTube.

Oh well, I'm not knowledgeable about that.  Now I'll have to see how to remove it.

People post music all the time on Youtube that is in violation of music copyrights, especially 'covers' of modern pop music.  Youtube will mute or remove such violations, especially if asked to by the copyright holder.  Other times the copyright holder doesn't notice or complain, so YT may not take action- that's why you see so many apparent violations left up.  They tend to enforce things rather inconsistently.  Be careful though, because if you violate and get warned several times they'll suddenly just delete your entire Youtube account.

Hmm.  There were three songs that were problems.  I replaced them and at the point where all I have to do is press "Enter" on the "Publish" button, but wonder if I should give it another try or not.

Well they they specifically tell you which songs were a problem and that the others weren't?  Are some of the other songs copyright protected as well?   If so, you would need to consider whether it's worth it.  (you can usually look songs up in Wikipedia and find out their status, or at least the composer and date.)

While YouTube sent me three emails citing copyright problems with three songs, I suppose others do have copyright issues since I picked a popular song for each year from 1900-2016.  I used small parts of the songs (about 40 seconds), especially from 1980 on (about 10 seconds), not specifically due to copyright considerations but because I simply didn't enjoy the post-1960s music as much.

So technically speaking they've sent you three violation notices already.  If I were you Al I'd drop it.  I've heard of people getting their YT accounts deleted after several violations and warnings.  I suppose you could write to them and ask them what would be allowed, but you might get a canned response.

Yes, it was three of the 117 songs from the original attempt I made to publish it.

Sorry to clog up the ning site with this issue which doesn't even involve banjos!
