What a groovy image. Love the banjo players hat, and the gents tapping the keg. Look how the little girl has her arm on the fiddlers shoulder. Charming.
What a great image! Love it when there's lots going on in a casual setting like this.
It's a very interesting group of folk, united by dogs, children, drink and music. And not just any music, but fiddle and banjo music. Where did you find this, Steve?
just surfing images, cant remember where or find it. Ill try later.
I noticed the dogs. I didn't even notice the children. ;)
I was not able to analyze it to the extent you did, Dan'l, but I also had the impression that it was a later 19th C lumber camp.
Apparently from Phil Gura's photo collection:

The photo does not seem to me to be any kind of touring performers troupe, so after reading the caption info i linked to, I;m wondering if the name Steven's Minstrels was written on the photo in jest, referring to an older known minstrel troupe? maybe one of the fellows in the photo was named Steven, so they jokingly called themselves after the earlier real minstrel troupe? Could the photo be as late as 1910?
What a great image! The fiddler at least is certainly is holding the fiddle like a real player.
I too love the little girl's hand on his shoulder. A great mix of various types of people.
I wonder if it wasn't a town name. There is a Stevens in Washington as well as one in Minnesota. This would explain the placement of the apostrophe in the title. It may even be sort of tongue in cheek.
