Period Guitar

Okay, finally...I have an amazing 19th Century Guitar. Undated and unbranded, it resembles something c. 1870. I have a corner of a label in there I will take a picture of...the border may be the identifier, as it has a distinct design . It came from a lot, where the other one was distributed by Firth and Pond. Jeff Branch of [e-mail] did a most extensive and fine job, turning this into a real player. It has really good balance and intonation. Watch for video and audio postings.

Did they use in 1870 the same standard tuning they use nowadays?

Yes, I'll try something tonight. Perhaps a Howe's tune, or at least one of them that is oddly keyed on the banjo for me.

Yes...same tuning. There are period tutors for the guitar. The ones I see take a watered down Classical approach. They resemble Carcassi studies. I am also going to just "react' to playing period material...and see what it does.

Well, I think I'll wait a few days. My touch needs to settle in on this instrument. You can't force the sound out of it....need to hang out with it for a while an see what it does.
