Okay, finally...I have an amazing 19th Century Guitar. Undated and unbranded, it resembles something c. 1870. I have a corner of a label in there I will take a picture of...the border may be the identifier, as it has a distinct design . It came from a lot, where the other one was distributed by Firth and Pond. Jeff Branch of guitarfixguy@excite.com did a most extensive and fine job, turning this into a real player. It has really good balance and intonation. Watch for video and audio postings.
A few pictures are here also.

Looking forward to some excellent music from you and the new axe, Tim. Do a couple of vids in period duds, it'll look great.
What a beauty! Nice to know it'll be well played and well cared for.
Did they use in 1870 the same standard tuning they use nowadays?
Yes, I'll try something tonight. Perhaps a Howe's tune, or at least one of them that is oddly keyed on the banjo for me.

Yes...same tuning. There are period tutors for the guitar. The ones I see take a watered down Classical approach. They resemble Carcassi studies. I am also going to just "react' to playing period material...and see what it does.
