So, those of you who are buying Gamut strings, what types/size/etc do you prefer and what can we expect to pay for a set? I've never bought any from them. If I contact Gamut, do they have any inkling what a banjo needs?

Gamut does not have a specific set that they sell.  I've ordered strings with two different dimensions.  The first gives you a very tubby bass sound, the second is a little lighter.

Per George at early banjo 1:

1) .52-.62 mm
2) .71-.92 mm
3) 1.00 -1.10 mm
5) .52- .62 mm

I started here using .65, .78, 1.1, and .55.     I used the .65 because I seemed to break my first string pretty often, and moving up to .65 solved that issue.

I'm now using .65, .74, .88, and .55.   The 1.1 is a Lyon gut string, the rest are Treble gut strings.  The 1.1 was awfully think by my taste.
