Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

This is directed mainly at Marc Smith, but also anybody else that owns a copy of the Converse Analytical. I have a copy from the LOC, but it differs from the one I posted in the Clubhouse, which came from Marc Smith. The copy I have has less pages...at least 20 or so. I think it is due to not having the "diagrams" section. It is at the printers being bound right now, so I'll look closer when it comes back. Does anybody else have an original?

The great thing about my copy is that the binding is completely shot. That meant that copying it was pretty easy as each page could be laid flat on the copier. We no longer have a copier here at work (technology has moved on, I guess) so I have resorted to digital photography. I do plan on doing the Converse again, digital photography yields a cleaner copy that can be manipulated.

As I recall, I did consider removing the "diagrams" section (or simply not copying it) at the time.

Somebody here (or on the Classic banjo) has another copy...perhaps Rob MacKillop?

Yup. I have a very nice copy, bought for about 50 dollars from a second-hand bookshop in France, via the internet. Let me know what you require. Your wish is my command.

How many pages does it have?

156.
Mine has 96, and paginated correctly. It has all the music. It left out the fingering diagrams. What happened??? Added later, or extracted later?
Does the LOC version have the cover on it? I suspect the first edition did not have the diagrams (1886) and that the 1887 issue included the diagrams. My cover has both copyrights on it (in very tiny print)...and the frontpiece mentions something like '400+ new diagrams', etc.
Okay, that makes sense. Thanks.

Mine claims it is ''Revised And Enlarged'' and copyrighted 1886 and 1887. So, you could have the RARE 1st edition, Tim, or at least a copy of it.

I don't think you are missing any music...

No, none. In fact there is one song you don't have.

LOL. You've got to tell me!
Okay Rob...I'll perhaps share it with you. Must be quite rare....in fact I have not tried it yet. Many new notation markings I've never seen before. Quite ahead of its time.
Is it called Foggy Mountain Breakdown?
