Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

It's another opening day and for the past few years, I've posted a baseball song or tune from the 1860s but I'm starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. By the time this song was published in 1867, baseball had abandoned the bound rule, where the batter was declared out if a fielder caught the struck ball on one bounce. Even during that era, however, a fielder who instead chose to catch it on the fly was venerated. Our club, the Eclipse Base Ball Club of Northville, prefers playing by the rules of 1864 as we find it more interesting and further distinguishes it from a modern softball game.

Thanks, Paul.  It's been 9 years since I did this but, at one point in it, I detect an Aspirin bottle (probably filled with rice).

Let me know if you need a skilled aspirin bottle-ist for your next one. I'm looking for work!

Would be interested in a video comparison of the percussive tones of aspirin bottles filled with:

rice, lentils, dry pinto beans, unpopped popcorn kernels, Sen-Sen, TicTacs, large pearl tapioca...and of course aspirin!

edit: forget the Sen-Sen, just found out they ceased production in 2013.    :(

See if you can get a grant for the research.  I'm fine with brown rice.

Nice! I was hoping for a lil baseball sumthing from you today :)

I work in gaslamp very close to stadium and it is always a hot mess of drunk folks with jerseys so I worked from home haha

is there any tab for this song?

Comment by Al Smitley on December 17, 2019 at 8:31pm

No TAB,.......just a simple song in G, C, and D, and I think an A7 occasionally.

I found the original sheet music.  thanks enjoyed listening to you play it.

Thanks Curtis.  Now that you've  found the original music, I must confess that I don't recall whether I altered it or not.
