Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Some of us have the "Little Yellow" Converse book. I assume that more folks have the Joe Weidlich Converse book in TAB. Anyway, I'm into this book right now, and find this to be very good for beginning to intermediate playing...all tunes of which are worthy of sticking into the repertoire. There is way more continuity in this book than any other, with some thread throughout that makes positioning, fingering, and styling familiar from one tune to the next. No "curve balls" in this book. You get a taste of those type of tunes in 6/8 time, as well as solid Stroke play. Which came first...this or the Green One? I would assume this one did. I hope someone is enjoying the versions I'm posting. I do them more for a diary of the songs than creating entertaining segues and arrangements. The videos are 99% true to the written page...100% unless I screwed something up. Let me know.

The intention of doing so was to create the same reference point in the tab that exists in the original.

No attempt was made to kill the messenger. I just don't see the point of having both a 'p' and a slur sign in your tab version. The original is there for all to see, so there is little point in reproducing such idiosyncrasies when all they do is clutter the page and add confusion. But I'm probably in the minority. I think including the original is great, but the tab version is surely your edited version?
If I may, I think having both is a good thing. The average person who might attempt to actually play these from TAB is far more likely to recognise the "P". The "nearly-authentic playah" is more likely to be looking at one or both and probably wondering what might have been left out of the TAB...if the slur isn't present.

Personally, I prefer to remove the slur in my TAB. 99% of TAB readers wouldn't know what a slur indicates w/o specific instructions. Of course, the program I use (TablEdit) produces a "-P-", which looks like a letter P in the middle of a slur...sort of. ;-)
J.Weidlich, in his tabbed " Briggs " that I am working from ,also ignores the dots, however, now having seen the notation, I am inclined to try both ways, staccato and slur , then decided which one I like and do whichever.

I did ignore it. Can't have it both ways. The first phrase did not do it it, and stylistically it makes no sense.

That's better. What do those two dots mean: Corn Shucking Jig, penultimate bar, first two notes - a pull off with two dots? I see you have ignored the dots, which is probably the best solution. They look deliberate, though.

I find that very surprising, Marc (aside from the made-up statistic). Looking through many of the tab books I have here for various instruments, they all show slur signs and none of them show a 'p'.

The outcome: we can't trust any notation, not even the original. Write your own music :-)
Hi Tim, sorry I forgot to say how much I appreciate seeing the notation.

Was wondering if it were possible to have on this site a " beginners " page. I noticed that you have some teaching videos and thought it might be a good idea to put them onto a new page with some of the easier Converse tunes, possibly with other members also adding easier pieces or exercises. Hope I'm not speaking out of turn or asking the impossible. It was just an idea.
I think it is a great idea.
Ah Sylvia, thanks for speaking up. Your input as a user of these resources would be valuable. Tell us what is most useful, and formats that have meaning to you. John, perhaps we could have a beginners page with advanced players contributing, and novice players asking questions and exchanging experiences? I know I needed one when I started...it would have been most helpful.

Hi Tim, was just thinking that for starters, your teaching videos plus some notation/tab tunes and the videos that go with the tunes so that beginners could hear what they have to play. Perhaps also advice on Tunings. Also , I'm not actually sure but I believe that the Tabledit people have a free reader, and the speed of the tunes can be reduced or speeded up, if this is correct then beginners may find it useful to slow down the piece and play along with the tune. Can't think of anything else at the moment, but you and the other experienced players may be able to think of something else. I am pleased that you and Rob think that a beginners page is a good idea. Thank You.

Sylvia, I think the main challenge of such a spot here would be the organization of it. Although a lot of good information could be compiled here, it would eventually lose congruency. Still, a repository for beginners material would be good. There is a link to the "Banjo Clubhouse", where I am gradually assembling something like this.
Hi Tim, sorry my idea wasn't workable , but thank you for listening. Will look in on " Banjo Clubhouse".

Actually, I don't know. We'll have John take a look into this and see if something on this site might work. Otherwise, stay tuned to the Clubhouse.
