Flop-eared Mule or Long -Eared Mule. There's a bluegrass version with a little picking south of the bridge. That may be called the Kicking Mule. I'd have to look that up.

The "Flop-Eared Mile" that I know of seems to be a reel that was merely a condensed and sped-up version of "Detroit Schottishe" published in 1854.  The first part of that was nearly the same as the first part of Foster's "Holiday Schottishe" published the year before.  Makes one wonder about tune evolution.

Oh, I should've read your posting more closely, Wes.  Kicking Mule (with strumming south of the bridge) is a completely different song/tune than the one I was citing.

I'm think right about that Detroit Schottische relationship Al. I kind of remember play with somebody that did that below the bridge lick on Flop Eared Mule but Kicking mule is a different tune.

Here's the one I think you're talking about...at least an old friend of mine used to use the "south" side of the bridge for this.  I don't know if the Dillards do that here but I couldn't resist including Andy and Barney!
