Thanks Al, It is interesting to note that that the first line & gag in Jump Jim Crow is "They say I play the scientific like Master Paganini!" who was a very famous guitarist & violinist of the day.  The joke would not have been funny if the audiences did not know who that was! Even in the rough music halls where Thomas Rice was perforning they knew something of this music.  Guitar music coming from the Paris scene was popular in America as well!
