My first attempt at Minstrel banjo playing. I clearly don't have a traditional instrument and I am finding it difficult to keep the strings in tune!
I am looking for advice on technique. I think I see people using their thumb and finger to strike the middle strings, but I can't be so sure two days into playing.
This is the first video I've even made of myself, so thank you for making me safe to do so.

you got the natural feel, all you need is a banjo that will do these tunes right. And also give you fingers room to dig in, ie wider neck & string spacing kudos!
Thanks, Steve. When I do decide on a minstrel banjo I'll have to do some research. I have a habit of spending more than I have, which is okay with me. So, when the time comes I will ask you all for advice. (Yes, I've already been looking around)
if you watching your budget, and who aint,,,, theres a 200$ way to go minsterel,,, and a 400$
without mentioning names the 400 imo,,,,,,,,, you may have to put together a bit,,,,,, but is way way superior to the 200. just my opinions fwiw
Steve-I have looked at all of these already. And, when the time comes I will remember your advice. I have an open back on order, so my husband may not be too pleased if I commit to another banjo right now. (And, I'm also looking for a bass).
You should sell your resonator banjo, then your husband can't complain, right? :)
Ha! I am in love with that banjo. It's a custom and I put too much love into the design to sell it :) But, I am okay waiting for new banjos. I don't need everything I want right away.
Oh ok, I didn't know you loved your res banjo!
I find my husband is placated if I sell some other instrument or at least some significant thing each time I buy a new instrument. One time I sold an antique doll and immediately bought a cheap mountain banjo with the money. Good move! lol!
Good idea. I think it's time to make stuff and have a craft show to raise soem banjo money.
