"You've probably figured out by now that "old-timey" banjo styles developed decades after the first Minstrel banjo styles."

I don't agree at all with this statement.  What Dan'l calls "old-timey" (meaning presumably the diverse playing styles captured in scores of recordings of mostly Southern players in the 1920s and 1930s) clearly has antecedents in minstrel "stroke style" and "guitar style," as well as in later "classic banjo."  I prefer to think of an evolutionary branching process rather than one "style" supplanting another.

Have heard it referred to as "old-time" in recordings and in music schools and instructional material. I am learning clawhammer banjo at the Old Town Folk Music School in Chicago and most interested in the early banjo music and styles that have it's roots with the original American banjo players, African slaves.  The clawhammer style has African roots and is a style similar to the Jola akonting. I find myself jamming with bluegrass musicians because there's are many more of them then Old-tme jams. Once a month I jam with a group of Old-timers.
