Are they inlays?   Of what white material?

Thanks, Steve.

Strumelia--the inlays are ivory, salvaged from the keys of an antique piano. With a wet towel and a clothes iron, they pop right off. In retrospect, though, I'm a little uncomfortable with that material in general, and don't know if I'll use it again.

I see.  I thought the term 'piano frets' meant merely that they were in a pattern of long and short, like black and white piano keys are.  Duh!   lol    Yes, though it's wonderful to recycle old things with history to them, I can relate to your thoughts.

Beautiful banjo.   :)
