Sorry that my technical ignorance requires me to waste time/space with this question but, how does one share personal email addresses with others on this list without putting it out to the whole world?  For example, I could discuss the "VIOLIN WITHOUT A MASTER" issue with Wes without bothering everyone else.

If you send the person a friend request and they accept, you two can exchange private messages.  See your INBOX to read them and compose messages.  To send a friend request, go to the other person's profile page and click on "add as friend" in the left hand column.  If you see "remove as friend" then they are already in your friend list and you can click on 'send message'.  Once two people are on each other's friend list, they can message privately on the site here.
