Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

For Sale: David Prat Gourd Banjo and Jeff Menzies tackhead

Hey there,

I recently bought a David Prat fretless bottle gourd banjo. It's a great banjo but I can't find a physically comfortable way of playing it. It's got a wenge neck, goatskin head(s), geared violin-like tuners. It's currently strung with Chris Sands nylon strings. I would switch to Minstrel nylgut strings. The scale is about 26."

I also have a Jeff Menzies tackhead banjo that I've had for some time and played a lot. It's got a 4th string buzz which might be nut-related. Jeff sent me a new nut but I never got around to changing it. The headstock is typical minstrel style, similar to the gourd banjo.

I am happy with my Bell minstrel banjo and I MUST get some instruments out of here.

Prices are negotiable. You can use my personal email, which is: judithrstern@gmail.com

    Thanks,

Judith

Just sayin'...if you attach a couple photos here in your thread, you'd probably increase the number of responses and offers.  ;)   People often buy spontaneously, and it's way easier to resist spending money if you have to write to someone for pictures. Just click on the little icon with the scenic picture in it to put pictures into your post.

Haha I was gonna say post pictures cuz I just like to look at banjos :D

I attached 3 photos, but only 2 appeared - both of the gourd, so here are Menzies tackhead photos.

I like to look at banjos too.

What are you asking for the tack head?

Hi Tom - I don't know.what's a fair price. I think I paid 600 or 700, but has that buzz issue.

Do you think $500 is reasonable? Let me know.

Hi Judith,

Do you still have the gourd banjo, and if so, what are you asking for it?

Best wishes,

Jim Robertson

Hi Jim - i do still have gourd banjo. i’m out of country and will be back in about a week. Can i get back to u then? i need to check what i paid. i think around 400 but maybe less. Judith

I'm in no big rush.  Enjoy your trip.  I could probably manage $400 or less!

Thanks,

Jim

Great. Will be in touch. J

Jim -

I am so sorry that I dropped the ball. However, I do still have the gourd banjo and would be happy to sell it to you. It right now has a broken 4th string but otherwise is ok. It has those tuners on it that are geared, but look like violin tuners. I would sell it for 300 plus shipping, if you are still interested. Sorry to have taken so long. When I am in buying mode, a delay can be a good thing  - stops me from being impulsive, but you might not have that problem!

All the best,

Judith

Hi Judith,

No apologies are needed. I am still interested, and the price sounds within reason. I've been scraping the barrel financially due to car repairs, a cat who chose to get sick when the emergency get was the only option, and quite a bit of money going out for a solo CD I just produced.

Should I use your personal email to discuss exchange of funds and addresses?

Hi Jim - you can email me at judestern3@gmail.com

Where are you located? If not too far, we can split the cost of the shipping, which I am assuming will be around $80. I haven't shipped anything in awhile.  I am not looking to make money -  I really just want to clear out some instruments and I have a different fretless that I play. Is there anything else you want to know? It's got that typical minstrel shape headstock and I believe the fingerboard is wenge - a dark brown hardwood.

the 4 strings on it are Chris Sands nylon strings. I think I'd put nylgut on them.  Want some photos? If you do, send me your email address. My address is:
