Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

the videos I posted walk in the parlor,,, well I see the tune Im playing is WAY different than Tims & others Walk in.....     that was the title given on the video I learned it off of.

Im not  quite sure what  a tune has to be,,,, to be "appropriate" to post here.   Im playing what could be called a minsterel banjo,,, but if that tune was a mountain tune, does that make it a unwelcome intrusion here?? I don't know.

I totally understand that some are more interested in the historical accuracy,, and some are just into the music and this type of banjo,, Id fall in the latter obviously.

I think these cool banjos have a lot of music in them, that never appeared in any tutor, but I may be in the minority.

if my wrong title offended ,, my apologies

Steve--I know two other tunes called "Walk in the Parlor" that are different from your tune or the commonly played tutor version.  There's nothing to aplogize for.  It sounded great.--Rob

well thank you, I lovehistory,,, early American civil war ww2 , but I guess my music is my favorite thing. Ive played other instruments,,,,, but nothing has been as interesting as the banjo.

If you're primarily a living historian or reenactor then of course the ideal is to accurately represent or at least explain the actual provenance you've based your impression on. There's nothing to be served by guessing at, or worse staging, an alternate history if the actual history is known. If someone were to reenact me in a 70s Neru jacket it should at least be turquoise polyester ;)

If on the other hand you're primarily a musician, there's no standard whatsoever for what constitutes a proper performance. To whit: The New Cristy Minstrels had nothing at all to do with the original Christy's Minstrels. In fact the whole folk movement of the 60s was not actual Folk music, but a whole new style of arrangements and performance that the old folks would have never recognized.

I'm with Rob. Whatever you call it, it sounded great in that video. Titles are just words. Music is...music!

I think your playing exhibits a real 'early banjo spirit' and flavor, and it does not feel 'modern' to me.  There are many subtle connections between clawhammer/oldtime banjo playing and stroke style playing- some of the lines are fuzzy.  Only a sourpuss wouldn't enjoy (or learn something from) what you did in your videos.   :)

Hey I posted an old clawhammer tune a couple weeks ago...and I'm still here!  lol

Steve, check THIS out... if you dare....
