Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Hello everyone,

I recently started a blog about the Banjo Sightings Database Project. As many of you know, in 2009, as part of my Project Director work supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, George Wunderlich and I have been working with an Advisory Board looking at early banjo history (ca 1620-1870) as a "test case" for knowledge management of vernacular music traditions. The blog site is: http://vmmaterialculture.blogspot.c...t-basic.html

I started spreading the word about my blog on several banjo lists (so far I've posted to places like Banjo Hangout, Banjo-L, Black Banjo, and a couple other places). If you can think of anywhere else, please let me know.

Thank you,
Greg

The "mountain" dulcimer people have a rudimentary sort of database, launched by Ken Hulme. I participated a little when it was being set up, and that list was made aware of your older Banjo Sightings DB. Just in the interest of the left hand knowing what the right is up to, it is here:

http://www.historicdulcimers.info/

If you (Greg) want to tell the dulcimer people what you are up to, try these:

http://everythingdulcimer.com/discuss/

http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/

In the former forum, see especially the "History of Dulcimers and Songs" area; Ken's database arose during discussions there. In the latter forum (which is another Ning group, so your password here will work), the "Dulcimer Ancestors" group is the most relevant.
Thank you reminding me about these sites, Richard.

I just sent a message to the Historic Mountain Dulcimers Database through the site's "contact" page. Hopefully I'll hear from them. I also sent a message to the dulcimer-ning site.

Are you a member of the third list?

Thanks,
Greg

I'm a member, and I've just posted your announcement there (less the mutilated address for your blog). I guess technically I can open the blog, copy its url from my own browser, and then post it. Will try that, anon.

hey greg -

as a librarian involved with and interested in digitization projects and digital libraries AND as a banjo maker and player AND someone who dearly appreciates the banjosightings project, i hope you keep the blog up-to-date!

(and let me know if you ever need any help!)

Just a quick update for this old discussion-

My "Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer" site is no longer hosted on Ning as in the links above (mountaindulcimer.ning.com).

Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer (FOTMD for short) is now on it's own hosted ALL NEW site, located at:  http://fotmd.com/

Thanks!

Oh wow, im a web dev by day so if any of ya'll ever need help i'll do what I can to get you right. However the lotech nature of online banjo stuffs is one of my favorite parts of this whole thing :)
