The "mountain" dulcimer people have a rudimentary sort of database, launched by Ken Hulme. I participated a little when it was being set up, and that list was made aware of your older Banjo Sightings DB. Just in the interest of the left hand knowing what the right is up to, it is here:

If you (Greg) want to tell the dulcimer people what you are up to, try these:
http://everythingdulcimer.com/discuss/
http://mountaindulcimer.ning.com/
In the former forum, see especially the "History of Dulcimers and Songs" area; Ken's database arose during discussions there. In the latter forum (which is another Ning group, so your password here will work), the "Dulcimer Ancestors" group is the most relevant.
Just a quick update for this old discussion-
My "Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer" site is no longer hosted on Ning as in the links above (mountaindulcimer.ning.com).
Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer (FOTMD for short) is now on it's own hosted ALL NEW site, located at: http://fotmd.com/
Thanks!
