Just got my banjo, the 5th has this , [what I think is a short peg] and wont even start to hold at D. the hole is quite large, when you try to stuff peg in to get it to hold, it hits stringsthe string wound around the peg,. I made it where there we only a single wind around post ,,, and still no go.
Is this peg short looking to you??? width at nut is actually 1 3/8 and narrow at bridge, not what I was expecting, but I guess I was warned.
again does the peg look too short, :(

Morning guys
Carl, yep , Im sending it back
Danl, the hole he drilled to accomadate the 5 peg is way way deeper than the peg. I never thought about the structural issue.
Bottom line is ,, I think he could make a real nice banjo , with just a bit more time spent, and actually tuning it up to see if it would hold tune.
There is nothing to worry about regards neck strength. Banjos, strung with proper strings and not telegraph wire, never needed patent steel trusses installed in the neck.
Before you make any rash decisions, try winding the string where it wraps towards the grip and not towards the neck hole. Doing it this way uses the string to pull the peg into the neck and not force it out.
