Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

A picture from the Lincoln Co. Library (Ontario) archives. December 1909. Nice range of banjos in the picture. The guys look like they're real players, although I wonder if the fellow with the bugle is just along for the ride. I like the poster in the window too. Beamsville is just west of Niagara Falls on the Canadian side.

Not that in makes much difference in this context, but the picture actually turns out to be from Beamsville, Ontario - a few miles north of Smithville. Whew, i fell better now - glad I came clean on that.

Ah yes, sitting by a fire  wearing all the clothes I brought, plus a blanket or two and the all important fingerless wool gloves... and playing away on the banjo!  Good Stuff!  When it's cold the head doesn't sag and the gut strings don't stretch and the old banjo stays in tune.... I think about that experience every time the weather turns hot and humid!  Maybe ya have ta be from Michigan to like playin' in the cold.

I'm pretty sure they just dashed out of their rehearsal in the Barber Shop for the photo because the light was better out there.

Yes they are holding their banjos like they actually do play.   :)
