On the way to Antietam, I stopped in Pittsburgh and saw the Stephen Foster museum and this statue.

I was just searching to see if anybody here had mentioned that statue, after spotting it in the Wiki article on Foster.  The banjo picker is our friend Uncle Ned.  It's a 1900 statue (by Giuseppe Moretti), which would account for the slightly farby banjo in the hands of a guy who was already dead in the 1848 song about him.  But how often does one see a fretless banjo in public sculpture?  Here's another shot, that can be viewed in high resolution:
