Songs of our Native Daughters

Just became aware of what I believe is a new project by Smithsonian Folkways.  If Greg or somebody has already posted it, I didn't search the right way.  Anyhow here is the link, lots of coverage of Rhiannon Giddens and photos of her with her James Hartel banjo.  The very moving sound sample (video) that I watched features her, but not the banjo.…See More

An Early Banjo Gathering at Renfrew Museum and Park

June 26, 2020 at 7pm to June 28, 2020 at 1pm
We are hosting an Early American Banjo gathering. The committee for this event are John and Elaine Masciale, Tim Twiss, Al Smitley, and Andy Chase. At the end of the last gathering there was a lot of interest in continuing with the gathering, but we needed a new venue.  After a lot of searching we are pleased to announce that Renfrew Museum is willing to host us.Our goals are:!. To educate about and create an appreciation for the early American banjo, its musical repertoire, and its role in…See More

Hi Dick, I wish I'd have known you were up here. Naperville is a short drive from here.

On my page, under my name and address is a link to change my picture or to change my my theme. You should be able to update your picture there.

Do you see a box on the top right hand side of the screen with your name in it on your page? What happens when you click the settings button? There is a way in settings to upload a picture there.

I guess the stand vs. sit issue does not apply to that instrument you're playing.

I've loved curly maple since I worked for an artist back in high school. He made intricate wooden inlay designs in boxes. I love it, but it's a pain to turn and, in my case, use hand tools on.

I've got an order in to Amazon for Ring the Banjar. For a newbie I understand the learning curve is great. I hadn't even figured that on the shields.

Hello.
After a few machine mis steps, I have gotten a copy (of the Gumbo Chaff book)to Mr. Tim Twiss, who has cleaned it up a bit, and should have it available to share.
An application to him should get you a better copy than the one I could supply.
Sorry I didn't reply earlier, but getting it sent (to Tim) distracted me, I'm afraid!

Yours,
David Swarens.

Hi Dick,

Yes, I'll be happy to try and post a larger version of the photo on the Harpers Ferry thread. Colin was the young boy and Cynthia Connolly was the woman from Arlington. Other than that, I don't know most people's last names, either, but I believe Melinda was going to send out a list with everyone's contact info.
