Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

I believe this to be a home made banjo. I bought it from a friend in the Civil War reenacting community. He told me it was made by a gentleman who played banjo in the Andersonville movie.

Hey Tom, That's interesting. The link below is to a site about the Banjo & the Civil War , I'm sure you'll find it interesting because the author claims it was He who made 2 Banjos for the Movie Andersonville. Here is the link

Thanks for this insight Dan'l, I came across the article while searching for some Banjo History. I was not familiar with Bob Flesher at all or with much of the History,  I most certainly found many aspects of the story to be unbelievable.  Regarding the Banjo itself, that would be terrible if he fabricated that story as well. Curiosity got the best of me and so   I actually just watch the movie Andersonsville last night to pause &  look closely at the Banjo scenes and it looks a lot like your Banjo Tom. I would definitely do more research on the actual maker of the banjo. To actually own a Banjo that was used in such a great civil war movie certainly makes it very special and valuable I would think.

The banjo looks like it's almost never been used.  Isn't there a maker's name inside?  Did Flesher perhaps ever make kits like this?

Flesher makes a banjo he calls the "Andersonville", but it doesn't look the same as this one. http://www.flesherbanjos.com/minstrel3.html

I am going to have to contact my friend again to see if he remembers the name of the person he bought the banjo from.  These are some interesting comments.  Thanks folks.

I doubt if this instrument was one actually used in the Andersonville movie, but I would like to find its history.

There is so label or residue to be found. However, the paint color is a pretty close match.
