Is a "Dron" something?
Good question, I tried to Google the term that is written above the fireplace, and nothing cam up. So who knows?
Wikipedia answered the Dron question to my satisfaction —"Dron was a Human male Admiral in the Republic Navy during the Clone Wars. He served with Jedi Genera." (That explains the uniforms)
On the planet Earth it's also a surname - maybe these guys are brothers.
I suspect the "n" is actually a "p". It was common in the period to not close the bottom of the "p". I think the writing above the mantle reads "Fun & Fury, 5 Drops". There are 5 musicians, enough instruments and whiskey for them all...sounds like a name for a pickup band.
Good eye Dan'l I think your right. I live in Santa Barbara and work for the Department of Fish and Game, I'm all over the Southern CA area. In a location near Lebec CA is an old Dragoon Fort, Fort Tejon, actully that's where I got started last year doing the CW reenacting. When I first saw this pic, I wasn't sure, what Dron meant, but I think your right. I Know the Park Ranger out there and he knows the history pretty well. I will check with him and see what he thinks.
I think that horizontal object with the rifle & banjo is actually a bayonet. But what supports it from falling down?
Paul
Here's a bayonet similar to what I'm remembering:
http://www.dixiegunworks.com/popup_image.php?pID=5222 I still can't make out what supports it, though. Is this from a Daguerreotype?
Paul
It's a longshot, but drons in Spanish is drones. Small harmoniums sometimes have 5 drones, and harmoniums were around then. ?
There may also be a third accordion on the mantel, lying buttons up.
Did the little accordions in the photo perhaps have 5 drones?
Ya know just about the time I found this picture, I saw O'l Dan Tucker/ Camp Town Shakers playing one in a video. He might know a little more about those.
