Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Emily Oleson's "The Meaning of Buck Dance" at Kennedy Center (Sept 19-20)

Dear Friends,

For those who came to the last 2 AEBG events, you'll remember Emily Oleson and her husband Matthew Olwell's great contributions as it relates to vernacular dance and the early banjo. If you are interested in seeing some of the directions they are taking their work with vernacular dance traditions, you'll be interested in their latest collaboration, which will be featured on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center on September 19th and 20th.

They have a facebook page about the event, which includes the following statement, "The Meaning of Buck Dance is a collaboration between Urban Artistry, Good Foot Dance Company [Emily and Matthew] and Baakari Wilder, commissioned by the Kennedy Center's Local Dance Commissioning Project. Drawing on the many definitions of "buck" dancing, and examining other connected forms, we study a fascinating Edison clip from 1894 to reflect our assumptions about American dances as we know them. 6pm Sept 19&20th. Millennium Stage. FREE."

You can see an 18 minute YouTube video, which consists of demo material that relates to the types of collaboration that will be presented at the Kennedy Center: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6lQyzQ-Q...

I'm planning on attending the September 19th performance. It should be great.

Best regards,

Greg

Fantastic clip Greg!  Thanks for sharing!

Greg, This is really wonderful.  I'm going to try to attend next week.  The dancing to the early banjo riff is quite effective and the Edison clip is a real find.  Any possibility that the dancing and the banjo and the film will be synchronized during the Kennedy Center performance?
