I use the rubbery kitchen shelf liner stuff in my lap too when playing my gourds- keeps them from slipping all over the place.  Comes in handy too in the gigbag for extra banjo cushioning.  I found some that was a tan color so less obnoxious than white or 'dusty rose potpourri'.   ;D
