Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

African-American Great Lakes chantey collected by Ivan Walton in the early 20th century. It's a pretty free-wheeling banjo accompaniment - little of this and a little of that. According to Walton's source, the ship where he heard this song had a "house banjo" hanging up and sometimes one of the guys would play it to make the loading go a little faster. I only sang a few of the 20+ verses.

I'm not sure how far the song itself goes back. The ship in the lyrics, the ""Black Sam" was actually the Samuel Ward which seems to have been launched in 1847. I don't know when she retired.
