Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

After Tim's most recent video, this takes us from the sublime to the ridiculous. In honor of Labor Day, my version of Briggs' Kick Up de Debble on a Holiday. It has no kick it all, actually, but I'm working on that. I play it better than this when I'm not recording myself. Each attempt got worse and worse! I send it out as an encouragement for other newbies--I'm sure you aren't doing any worse than this!

Go Brian! We used to have a lot more variety on this and the Classic Banjo ning site, but I was beginning to fear that beginners and 'post beginners' were getting too scared to post videos. I for one get as much enjoyment out of this video as out of any. This is not a site for professionals (although they are most welcome to contribute) but for all of us. It should be like meeting up in the park and sharing tunes, no matter what standard. Good on you, Brian, and no way is it ridiculous! Encore!

I'm with Rob: good work, keep it up! It is very tough to hang yourself out there but I think you'll find we're an appreciative audience.

I have the same problem with recording. If I don't get a decent take early on, it just goes downhill. Take a break, go get your mind off of it and try again.

I really sympathise with the woes of recording. There are times it can take me a half an hour to recard two minutes of music. I've learned that if I can't get a decent recording in 10 minutes, then I take a break, and start over again. The thing is, my playing has really improved with my making recordings. Keep it up!

Recording tips...pour a nice stiff drink-as much as you can handle in a single night. Sit down in front of the camera and begin sipping and playing. Eventually, calms nerves will meet skillful execution. If not, and you end up hammered without a take, repeat the process again another day. Eventually, you WILL get a good take.
