Our first outing into Minstrel tunes. We have been playing Old Time banjo and clog tunes for some time, but decided to learn and add some minstrel tunes to our repertoire. This is one of the first. We do not have recourse to any advice on our playing other than from this site [which is terrific] so any observations on our beginning tune would be appreciated.

Wow that's a great start, John!
Did you make that banjo?
observations you can either use or toss out- they are worth two cents each:
Either you have some strings tuned a little flat, or you are playing a little sharp on some of your fretted notes. Assuming you got properly in tune on the open strings...when I have intonation issues i force myself to slow down so I can place my fingers more accurately. I speed up only when something is getting too easy and doesn't need correction. But that's just my personal approach.
Cool that your companion can get a 'thumb shiver' going already on that tambo! Percussion adds so much richness.
You may want to consider now learning Camptown Hornpipe, because it's quite similar to Cotton Pod, but has its own very distinct syncopation which can shake your clawhammer hand out of its 'comfort zone'- something I find very useful when trying to play stroke style instead of falling back into my 'clawhammer ways'.
There is little in life more fun than music that is home made with friends or loved ones, in my opinion. :)
You guys are doing just GREAT- keep adding new tunes one at a time! NEVER be afraid to post them here- rough or polished, whatever, no matter. :)
