Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

In August I'm gonna roll up some big minstrel tambourines and make the jingles. If anyone is interested let me know. This isn't an ad. I don't make enough money doing this to feed the cat,  but it keeps the wood supply up.

I finished a Boucher banjo on July 4th. I was diddling around with a melody and had just read in the 'Early Minstrel Banjo' book about 'Elevation'......  which explains the lack of notated slides in the tutors. The writer claims that slides at the time sounded too primitive, elevating above this technique would be desirable I guess. That was then. So here's some slides. i call the tune 'The Fourth Of July." Ah..the freedom to slide.

As in grain, or peck...something real primative?

Video is nice...I like slides..or "glissandos"...as long as it is not overdone.

Ya, I've made lots of "Bucket Banjos." They sound GREAT. Sometimes folks have a bucket of their own, usually nasty looking, which makes a great banjo. I cut 3 or 4 inches off of the bottom - disassemble the staves, glue them together, glue a wood 'tone ring' on top only to hold the staves together. Then  you have a solid rim. Any kind of neck goes into it and there you go, a bucket banjo. With the bottom of the bucket on, it has a resonator which helps kick out the sound, plus it has that solid feel of a resonator banjo with all the air inside I guess, even though I put in soundholes. Buckets are everywhere. Grain measures are cool too but harder to find. Most of these are dark color, so I use walnut from Peru which is chocolatey brown.

I've been wanting a tambo for a while. Let us know when these roll out and what the price grade is going to look like. Fantastic tune by the way. If my arms weren't about to fall off from a long night of busking, I'd give it a go right now!

Terry, I saw on the activity feed that my buddy Valerie just 'liked' this video today, so I had to come back and watch it again.  Fantastic!   I gotta learn this this tune!  Did you make it up?  Do you have a tab by any chance?  If not I;ll just figure it out slowly- what's your tuning here?

It's so infectious!

Hey can you make minstrel tambourines with adjustable bracket heads?
