"thanks, bought a 1890s banjo from england, tried to fit a real skin, no go, rim to tight. very odd ball head size. the head thats on it is full of pin holes, and a child had his way with an ink pen...so i went with it."

"yes , i agree. when you finally settle on a string type and size, it is best to buy them in singles"

"oh crap! i was paying around 21 dollars a set! buying things from the virgin islands is sometimes cost prohibitive although we use usps, they label us international shipping."

"Mimmo is a very good friend of mine (inventor of NulGut) but he doesn't sell singles in a variety of guages, otherwise, I'd buy his strings. But I never buy sets from anyone. I always buy singles and make my own custom sets."

"Yeah, sounds like you tried Nylgut 'Classic' set... which though I can use for higher oldtime tunings, are too thin for low minstrel tunings...unless you have a particularly long necked banjo... which apparently you don't. You might…"

"Sounds like the classic nylguts. I found em to gummy and flappy for minstrel tuning. The minstrel nylguts come with wound fourth and are better suited."

"i suppose since your banjo is longer scale i could just up the size slightly and be safe. btw i went thru many of your videos and really like your style and voice."

"tom, do you think your string gauges would work on my banjos? my scale prefrence is 25" give or take a fraction. i usually use Just Strings .com for my guitars, but really hadn't a clue on sizes for nylon strings as my guitars are steel…"

"a couple of reasons i am not excited about nylguts. to thin. to expensive. i love a wound fourth, which they now replaced with a fatter nylgut. they shred where you play most often. they do not offer single string replacement. i have tried the reds…"

"Forgot to mention: I use a scale of 26.375 inches for all my banjos. That way I have total consistency."

"If you tune to Briggs-pitches then start with the gauges below and then you can dial each string in, up or down, as is YOUR preference. Make you OWN sets. Buy singles. Savarez, Pyramid, and D'Addario all make excellent musical nylon strings,…"

"Was it the Nylgut "Classic" set or the Nylgut "Minstrel" set that you tried?  What was it about them that you didn't like?"
