"Has anyone heard from Terry Bell in a while? I've emailed 3 times over the past few weeks, but no response, which is very unlike him."

"Depending on how each one if us defines repertoire, I'd consider not only his manual, but his regular show tunes as well. Whatever he would play on a regular basis would be part of his repertoire."

Rob Mohr replied to Timothy Twiss's discussion The Old Music
"I was referring to the classical style of guitar playing, which would make its way into the banjo, intentionally or not. By big house, I meant the main residence of the plantation owner. I took repertoire to mean a printed representation of style,…"

Rob Mohr replied to Timothy Twiss's discussion The Old Music
"I would that as they were playing the classical guitar in "the big house", a lot of that style influenced the banjo playing, much like the fiddle. A lot of these early tunes feel to me to be classical arrangements, note for note, as…"

"Ahhh okay that helps to know notes are not in usual places on banjo. I couldn't get it to sound banjoish at all which is why I am doubting myself. One time my banjo teacher had me transcribing this monstrous fiddle tune, the name escapes me…"

Strumelia replied to Rob Mohr's discussion O'er the Crossing
"Particularly in this tune, it's the odd or unexpected phrases and notes (the ones that don't go where you normally would expect them to) that are essential to give the tune its unique character and identity. "

Rob Mohr replied to Rob Mohr's discussion O'er the Crossing
"i don't think I'm too far from it. It's just little twiddly bits to keep it from sounding so droll. I typically need both the tab and to hear it and go from there. In typical folk songs, you can get away fudging some things or…"
