"Paul, She looks like a keeper. The nut doesn't look too low to me. Maybe too high? Here is something I found online: "The string slots for fretless banjo nuts should be of a depth that holds the string slightly above the finger board. The…"

Paul Neher replied to Brent W Browning's discussion Banjo style played before minstrel?
"I am a Civil War re-enactor. as such, I looked to the style correct to the period, which lead me here. My buddy Dean play old-tyme, but also in the clawhammer style ... so I get a little of that influence as well. what's the difference between…"

tack-head front

"the banjo group was a REAL big help ... advised to soak the skin in water 20 minutes, and NOT stretch it, but to just tack it down lest it stretch too much. I glued the ring top, then laid it down, tacked it into pre-drilled holes, and overnight it…"

general shape idea

"John, thanks! Jim Moffet made the hoop for me. It's really thin, so I am going to do some bracing. It's also a little out of round (which is good because I wanted it to look home made not bought), so I am going to make it a tack head."

general shape idea

"This is shaping up nicely. Did you make the hoop? That is the one thing that has eluded me. I'd love to see how you shaped it and are going to finish it. Are you planning on making a tack head, or are you going to go for a rim with hardware?"

beginnings ...

Work progresses on my minstrel banjo. My friend James Moffet made me a body out of Ash (I think). It's kind of out-of-round, so I decided instead of a hoop, I would make it a tackhead. I found a beautiful piece of poplar for the neck, got it all planed, marked, and my friend Shane is rough cutting it for me. Talked with a VIOLIN maker here in Fort Wayne. he said for $25 he would carve my tuning pegs and ream the holes for them so they would be good fits, imperative to friction tuners working…See More

Just at the cusp ...

I send you all greetings. I've been re-enacting Civil War for 15+ years, and a good friend of mine (Jim Moffet) suggested I join here as I am interested in making and playing in camp a minstrel banjo. My friend Dean barber said he will teach me to play when i get one, so I am obviously eager for that first step. Thank you all in advance for your kind words, encouragements, and advice.

Paul

My banjar is tuned in "D" ... any song suggestions i should learn?
