Notice how it contains the dactyl phrases....block chords, melody doubled, and those crazy triplets. A nice insight into the style of backing a singer.

Strumelia...this would be an example of one of those "embedded" melodies if you played just the banjo part. See the notes match up on strong beats.

Ah, Tim - I see now it's more just a matter of semantics to me I think.  To me the word 'embedded' means hidden inside or difficult to separate out or something.  When i look at this sheet music- the banjo part- the melody seems front and center to me, mostly emphasized on the 1 and 3 beats, with some typical banjo-y moves for icing/decoration.  I guess that's why the Rice melodies don't seem 'embedded' to me.  Because I approach the rhythm with a default of assuming the 1 and 3 are the emphasized beats in most of the non-syncopated 2/4 and 4/4 tunes (or just the 1 in 3/4), the melody usually jumps out fairly clearly for me.  When I see dotted notes or irregular rests, it tells me there may be trickery afoot and I need to approach and examine more closely, as in Injun R.C. or Hobson's Jig.     :)

I guess
