Oh boy. Look what arrived in the mail the other day. (one of Terry's Boucher kits!) I can't wait to claw my way into the 1860s with a tension-headed fretless that may actually still work in the summer. My tackheads have "summer bridges" that look like the Golden Gate. Now, to settle on a finish for it — maybe aquamarine metal fleck?

that looks nice, how you going to do the finish?
The others I built I did with stain and oil finish. I may try shellac on this. I'm picturing somthing red-ish.
I want to try the shellac next one. Terry makes it look good.
"Once you use dye, you'll say - stain, goodbye!" Could you tell I made that up?
I think thats true, I never knew, No more stain for me. transtint is what itll be
Terry, will a 1/2 oz bottle be enough for the neck and another 1/2 oz for the hoop?
Yes, Tom. The 1/2 oz. bottles are SUPER concentrated. When I send you the instructions you'll see how much easier, faster drying, better looking and less stinky wood dye is.
While I didn't use a wood dye, that (now famous) "rusty water" is a similar concept; no smell, dries fast. If I ever do another kit or build my own or even with other wood projects at home, I'm all for dyes over stain.
Oh, but Ian, I'd go for sunburst on the neck and gold fleck on the rim ;)
