It was part of a skit-- I can't remember what it is off of the top of my head.  Search google books for like this one...

By the time this (and others) were published these skits, jokes and gags were tried and true.  People expected the same jokes and skits over and over.  There are even accounts of the audience shouting punchlines along with the comedians.
