Anybody ever try the Eighth Lesson-"Extra Playing" on page 18 and 19? It is part of early showmanhip on the banjo, but reading the directions to achieve the result proves to be a challenge.
Perhaps the "curve" is not the shape of the hand but the shape of the strike? I'm thinking along the lines of the strum in "Corn Shucking Jig" where I strum in a circle, across the head and then back across with the thumb near the 12th fret, etc.
I had a peek at the Rice book and my impression was that he was describing an Uncle Dave Macon type move like Marc describes.
My eyes glazed over pretty fast trying to figure out exactly what he was trying tell us.
