Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

On June 6th the dedication of the Sam Sweeney memorial stone was held at the Confederate plot in the Graham Cemetery in Orange, VA. Joe Ayers and the Virginia Serenaders did a great job in the music department, giving the audience of about 100 people a chance to hear some of the music that Sam played. Joe answered questions about Sam's life and times. Great time was had by all.

Sweeney died in one of two military hospitals in Orange on January 13th, 1864 ( same day Stephen Foster died in NYC!), and was buried in an unmarked grave in what is now the Confederate plot in the Graham Cemetery. The memorial stone, a government Confederate gravestone, is located near the flag pole in the plot. The Graham Cemetery is a mile south of Orange on Route 20.
