Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

Great music, great laughs, great food. A day of greatness. Some familiar and obscure tunes. Some nice singing. Four fiddles. Big banjos, little banjos, Tim's old guitar, and lots of plunkin' !!  Musicians came from all points in Michigan, north, south, east, west, and central.

Cheers Terry. This day rocked!

Thanks for hosting....

There in spirit! Looks like a great time!

I liked the setup. I really thought we hit some good grooves.....nice tempos.

Oh wow, looks like a terrific get together.  Lots of variety.

Is that the new small Boucher you just completed, Terry?

Are those two different Stichters, or the same banjo in both pics?

Who made the two gourd banjers?

What were some of the tunes and songs played?

One tune I especially enjoyed was "Wake Up in The Morning"

We played the standards, Cornshucking, Angelina, Glendy Burke, etc.. plus Tim and Al had some hot stuff. Sommer, the fiddler is a music teacher and great singer and we harmonized on Hard Times Come Again No More and Sweet Evalina. My Irish fiddler brother from Grand Rapids, Steve, showed up and we did some hot stuff. Danny played along to everything with his concertina and whistles. Tom had his Prust banjo, Rizal had a nice gourd banjo. Adam had a gourd banjo he and I built a few months ago. Brian was showing off his new humungus Stichter, full scale (kit) and the other Stichter is a bit shorter (mine). Mark has 2 Bells now, a "G" Boucher, and an "A" Boucher. And pops pulled out his accordion and played us a polka. We passed the instruments around then had some good chow. Tons of fun.

terry, you are so lucky to have both your son AND your 'Pops' to play music with....such a rare and wonderful thing.   :)

-Which tutor does the 'Old Tare River' in Tim's tab come from?

The gourd banjo with the ebony fingerboard was made by Barry Sholder of Dallas, GA. It is a canteen gourd with a maple neck.
