Minstrel Banjo

For enthusiasts of early banjo

I've added a new Ning application - Huddle workspaces. According to Ning, this should allow us to create and upload files. Let's see what we can do.

I uploaded a pdf file to my "huddle space". Seems to work. When I get more time, I'll explore more.
I added a workspace, and added all of my friends. I also uploaded a file, which means that any of my friends should be able to to to my huddle space named banjo music files and download what I put there.
I went in and used it. This will be good. Tell us more about the collection you have. I forget, what software do you use John?
I use Finale to create scores. The collection was created in Microsoft Publisher, and then printed to PDF. I wanted to take some things that I commonly play, along with a few things that I thought I should learn, and put them together in one place.

The first piece is transcribed from a Second South Carolina recording, and Elaine and I play through this regularly.

The last piece was a curiosity from a collection of civil war songs and poems. It was a favorite piece of the 13th tennessee and 154th tennessee, which are the regiments that I reenact. It doesn't really belong in the collection, at the time it seemed like a good idea to include it.

I brought the tunings down a step from the later banjo instructors. This was for two reaons, 1 - at the time I only read banjo music in d/g (which I have since fixed, I have strong relative pitch bordering on perfect pitch, and playing in a different key threw me off), and 2 - my banjo is usually in Briggs tuning, and if other musicians want to play with me it is helpful for them to have the music in the same key in which I am playing.

You will notice that there are two sets of lyrics for some of the songs. In some cases these are additional lyrics that were added in the time period, and in a few cases they were changed around to be a little more politically correct. This is unforunate, but necessary in a public setting where you don't want to have to take the time to constantly be making disclaimers etc. I tried to keep the context of the songs when adjusting the lyrics.
Dan'l, you are right. The songs are in Minstrel G. If anyone else is interested in these, send me a friend request, and I'll add you to that huddle space.
