Haven't lived there for 38 years, but I'm a native.  You might find some early banjo sympathizers in Flat Creek or Wartrace.  Or ask somebody at the MTSU Center for Popular Music; or ask Roby Cogswell (State Folklorist, works under the TN Arts Commission).

thanks Razyn , I know Roby, and am a very active member of the old time community here, but dont know anyone into stroke style. I will see Roby tonight at the 5 spot jam, ill ask him. Thanks again!

Tell him ol' Pappy Dick Hulan said heighdy.

Are you some of them McLains out around Haley and Bugscuffle?

Will, do! Nah, not from round there, im a Maryland transplant.

Well, I'm not from MT, but I'm close by in Huntsville, AL (I did live in Fayetteville, TN for 10 yrs). I come up to "Breaking Up Winter" every year. Are you a member of NOTSBA (Nashville Old Time String Band Association)?

My fiddler Mary Alice Bernal is one of the organizers of b u w, im good friends with Buddy Ingram too, dont do the notsba thing due to thier close minded ideals and cookie cutter music, and their "fear" of minstrel music doesnt help!

Interesting. I've been playing 'stroke style' at BUW for 6 or 7 yrs. No, I don't do it in the jams but I have always gotten positive comments, etc. I bought my first stroke style books from John Hatton at his Cleff'd Ear market @ BUW.

I'll be at BUW 2012 (March?), it would be a hoot to have an early banjo splinter group there.

we should do it, ! i usually camp out back in the field behind the grand lodge, it would be great to play some early banjo music!

I live in Kansas City but my maternal ancestors lived in middle Tennessee, if that counts.  GG grandfather Peter Anderton, his three brothers and several cousins all lived near Manchester.  They served en masse in Company B of the 37th Tenn. Infantry, CSA.  Almost all of them perished.  I must visit Manchester sometime.

Manchester is only about an hour's drive from Breaking Up Winter, Carl. You could come down, visit your relations and pick a bit of banjo with us. Of course, Manchester is less than 30 minutes from Lynchburg, TN...always a fun tour of the JD distillery!
