AEBG is nearly upon us! I know the event is geared to all experience levels, but my question for past attendees is: are there any particular songs that tend to *always* get played during jam sessions? In other words, what are the early banjo equivalents of songs like Cripple Creek, Soldier's Joy, Old Joe Clark, etc. for old-time music?
Really looking forward to seeing you good folks there!

It seems to me like "Old Dan Tucker" got played a lot.---Rob Morrison
There are a lot of "standards" out of the primary instructors that were played. Here is a partial list to my recollection:
Brigg's Jig, Brigg's Corn Shucking Jig, Alabama Joe, Alabama Walk Around, Brigg's Reel, Buckley's Jig, Circus Jig, Devil's Dream, Essence of Old Virginia, Hard Times, Les Sylphides, Phil Rice's Excelsior Jig, Bully for You/St. Patrick's Day in the Morning, Where Did You Come From?, Yankee Doodle.
There were a lot of Dan Emmett and Stephen Foster songs played.
My experience was this....everybody sits around with low murmuring noodles. Eventually a tune riff sprouts up like a little flower. One by one everybody joins in until it is a an unstoppable wave. It is generally played enough times that if you did not know it when it started...you will by the end. Sit by somebody that knows it. The more people that know it, the longer it is played.
PS...here is a link to the page with the greatest hits from 2006. I'm sure it has not changed a great deal. All great tunes.
