Event Description

Updated Nov 18: This lecture has totally disappeared from the MFA web site, but according to Bob Kilham (who is playing the banjo during the lecture) the event is still on!

I just heard about this - a few months in advance instead of 2 days after for once! Here's the description from the MFA web site:

Noted banjo historian Jim Bollman and Vermont musician Bob Kilham discuss the early history of the banjo in America, from its origins as an instrument created and played by African slaves to its full-blown popularity in minstrel shows prior to the Civil War. Bollman uses instruments from his collection to illustrate the banjo’s evolving design, and three important examples from the MFA’s collection are demonstrated by Kilham.

Lecture-Demonstrations are supported by a generous grant from the MFA Senior Associates.

Free with Museum admission.

I'd almost make the drive to hear that fretted Asborn. Ahhh.

I'm definitely planning on attending, but then it's only an hour and a half drive for me. I know it's a weekday, but if anyone else from New England is thinking about going, we should think about trying to have an informal gathering somewhere in Boston that afternoon.

Yah. I'd be sittin' in the third row, whimpering softly to myself. Then I'd have to go find a lobster roll...excuse me, "Lobstah Roll"

Actual title, though, is "Banjo in the Minstrel Era."

It's a long way for me to come for just one hour so I would love to get together with other minstrel players afterwards. It would be neat to meet folks from this group. Not too many minstrelites in this neck of the woods

I agree, a meetup would be great. Where are you coming from, Rick?
